Quarterbacks stand out: only 49.6% of Questionable QBs were active, on a small sample (n=226). One possible reason is that teams tend to list a starting QB as Questionable only when it’s genuinely in doubt, but the data alone can’t prove why.

Every full season from 2020 to 2025 falls between 66.7% (2024) and 70.8% (2021), so the overall rate is steady. Each full season has 1,186–1,525 Questionable tags. 2026 so far (Weeks 1–5): 67.5% (n=265).

Does the base rate hold up?

Before 2026 games were added, we ran a holdout test of the 2020–2025 rates on 2026 Weeks 1–5: the model said Questionable players would be active 69.7% of the time; 67.7% were (n=266).

The current rates include 2026, so we also run a weekly walk-forward check: each 2026 week is predicted using only data from before that week. So far: Questionable predicted 69.7%, actual 67.5% (n=265).

Sample sizes

The full table covers 34,581 final injury-report entries (2020–2026, through Week 5, regular season) matched to game-day rosters by player ID; 0 of 34,810 rows were unmatched and 212 had no practice status. The 95% intervals are Wilson score intervals.

Base rates only. These are historical averages for everyone who carried the same tag. They don’t know about the specific injury, coach quotes or beat-reporter news, and that news should win when it exists.
